The Throw Down of The Low Down

Record Setting Ensemble of Low Flutes during the National Flute Association Convention in Orlando, August 2018

During a Friday evening concert of the National Flute Association Convention in Orlando on August 10, 2018, one hundred twenty five low flutes of all shapes and sizes made low flutes history. Directed by Paige Dashner Long, these tubular titans premiered Greg Lutz’s “The Terrible Tubes Take Over The Town”. It was an amazing sight and sound for all.

With 69 alto flutes, 39 bass flutes, 2 contr’alto flutes, 13 contrabass flutes in C, 1 sub contrabass flute in G, and 1 double contrabass flute in C, the flutists of this incredible ensemble gathered during convention for two rehearsals.  Prior to convention, they prepared to perform this challenging music, learning a variety of contemporary techniques, such as a microtonal groove, bamboo tones, aeolian sounds, octave overtones, and multiphonic didgeridoo flourishes. Then, the tubes took over, performing masterfully and artistically to a very appreciative and enthusiastic audience.

Everyone is grateful for Lutz’s contribution of this outstanding music to the low flutes repertoire. The Throw Down of the Low Down is just the beginning of more epic, tremendous tubular performances to come!
